ICB History

Embark on a journey through the inspiring legacy of Dr. Sedki M. Riad, the visionary behind the Islamic Center of Blacksburg (ICB) and Masjid Al-Hedaya. Since its inception in January 1990, Dr. Riad's unwavering dedication to serving Allah through education and Da’wa activities has left an indelible mark on the community.

Embark on a journey through the inspiring legacy of Dr. Sedki M. Riad, the visionary behind the Islamic Center of Blacksburg (ICB) and Masjid Al-Hedaya. Since its inception in January 1990, Dr. Riad's unwavering dedication to serving Allah through education and Da’wa activities has left an indelible mark on the community.

Janurary 1990

Janurary 1990

  • Started the Islamic Center of Blacksburg, ICB, for the sake of serving Allah through education and Da’wa activities.

  • Running a weekend Islamic School that served over 50 children running about 15 parallel classes for over 7 consecutive years.

  • Produced a monthly Da’wa publication with over 600 copies distributed by mail in the New River and Roanoke Valley for over 5 years.

  • Operated in private homes & rented apartments for 8 years.

  • Started the Islamic Center of Blacksburg, ICB, for the sake of serving Allah through education and Da’wa activities.

  • Ran a weekend Islamic School that served over 50 children running about 15 parallel classes for over 7 consecutive years

  • Produced a monthly Da’wa publication with over 600 copies distributed by mail in the New River and Roanoke Valley for over 5 years.

  • We launched one of the few early Islamic websites in the world: http://www7.bev.net/civic/icb.

  • Attracted so much traffic and jammed the Blacksburg servers.

  • Established Masjid Al-Hedaya in a Rented office space (1000 sq ft).

  • A group of dedicated students with a limited budget extended themselves to pay the $900 monthly expenses.

  • About 25 people pay $25-$50 each out of their marginal (1998) income to cover the rent and utilities.

  • Dr. Sedki M. Riad has been the Director of ICB since 1990 and the caretaker of Masjid Al-Hedaya since its founding in 1998.

  • Established Masjid Al-Hedaya in a Rented office space (1000 sq ft).

  • Expanded the Masjid to 2000 sq ft.

  • Established “Kids Heaven Childcare & Learning Center”.

  • Kids Heaven was certified for 35 children.

  • Monthly rent was ~ $3,500 ($42,000/year)

  • Current land at 113 Southpark, Blacksburg, VA was acquired​ to convert to an owned premise.

  • A conceptual plan was done to collect needed fund.​

  • The Masjid Closed due to an excessive increase in rent.

  • Layout is not optimum and can’t be customized.

  • Had to leave rental place at 106 Southpark, Blacksburg, VA​.

  • Opted to construct the new masjid instead of spending $500k on rent over the next 10 years.
